If there is one thing which all motorists dislike, it’s filling up their gas tank more often that they would like to.

As much as you would like to see it, gas prices aren’t showing any signs of lowering. And while some motorists are choosing to leave their vehicle at home and look for alternate transport, there are steps which all drivers can take to reduce their gas usage.

Get More from Your Gas Tank

If you are looking to improve your fuel economy and reduce the number of times you need to visit your local gas station, Ace Hi Oil has a post with some great tips which can help.

Be Smart with Your Gears

If you drive a manual transmission then you have the perfect starting place to reduce your gas usage.
  1. Instead of changing through your gears and using them to slow down your vehicle to stop or to simply slow for a corner, take your foot off the gas pedal as soon as you know you need to stop, and use your brakes to take care of the rest. Just as your driving instructor taught you.
  2. Each time that you accelerate from a standing start, instead of pushing your gears until your gearbox is screaming, change through them at a comfortable pace and when you can hear your engine begin to struggle.
Every time that you push your gearbox, your RPM rises, which means that your engine needs to use your energy than it needs to.  Next time, use your brakes to slow you down and take it slow when starting from a red light.

Don’t Warm Up

While there was once a time when you needed to warm up your engine before you could drive to prevent engine damage, this is no longer required. Warming up an engine is actually just warming up the conventional oil inside, which has become thick during cold temperatures, leaving your engine exposed to damage. By switching your engine oil to synthetic oil, which retains its consistency during cold temperatures and doesn’t need to warm up, you can remove the need to waste fuel by warming up your oil for five minutes each morning. Look for Smarter Routes

If there are errands which you complete regularly then it’s likely that you can reduce your gas usage with some smart planning. For example, if there are errands which are close to each other, use a mapping app or website and find:
  • Which times of the day you can do your driving to reduce being stuck in traffic?
  • Which routes have the least number of miles?
  • Are there routes which don’t include being stopped for long periods?
  • Is there a place you can park and walk to a couple of errands?
Considering these is a great way to reduce your gas usage by reducing the number of miles which you regularly drive and the gas wasted being stuck in traffic.

Choosing the Air Conditioner or the Window

It can almost seem like second nature to switch on the air conditioning when the temperature in your car begins to rise. And while this works, it also uses a lot more gas in the process. The next time you feel hot and are driving at a moderate speed around town, wind down your windows to let the air inside your vehicle circulate and cool down you and your passengers. When taking on this tip, be sure to lower your rear windows to allow stale air to be pushed out as fresh air comes in from your front open windows. However, if you are on the freeway driving at cruising speed then the resistance created by the wind can work against your vehicle and require your engine to work harder, so in this instance, choose the air conditioner.
