How to Change Your Car Filters

Preparation

Before you begin, gather the necessary tools and supplies:
  • New filter (appropriate type and size)
  • Screwdrivers, pliers, or wrenches
  • Oil filter wrench (for oil filter replacement)
  • Oil drain pan
  • Gloves and safety goggles
  • Rag or paper towels
  • Vehicle owner's manual

Engine Air Filter

  1. Open the vehicle's hood and identify the air filter housing (usually a black plastic box with clips, screws, or latches)
  2. Carefully remove the clips, screws, or latches securing the housing cover. Gently lift the cover to access the old air filter.
  3. Take out the old air filter by lifting it out of the housing. Pay attention to its orientation to install the new filter correctly.
  4. Check the housing for any debris or dirt. Use a rag or paper towels to wipe away any particles.
  5. Place the new air filter into the housing, aligning it with the same orientation as the old one.
  6. Secure the housing cover back in place using the clips, screws, or latches.

Cabin Air Filter

  1. Check the owner's manual to find the cabin air filter. It's often behind the glove compartment or beneath the dashboard.
  2. Open the glove compartment and remove any contents. Locate the access panel that covers the cabin air filter.
  3. Slide out the old cabin air filter from its slot.
  4. Slide the new cabin air filter into the slot, ensuring it's properly aligned.
  5. Place the access panel back in position and secure it.
  6. Close the glove compartment and replace any items you removed.

Oil Filter

  1. Using a jack and jack stands, lift the vehicle to a safe working height. Be sure to secure these safely.
  2. Find the oil filter, usually near the engine block. Place an oil drain pan beneath the filter to catch any oil that drips.
  3. Use an oil filter wrench to loosen and remove the old filter by turning it counterclockwise. Let the oil drain into the pan.
  4. Before the installation, apply a small amount of fresh oil to the rubber gasket on the top of the filter. This keeps it from sticking.
  5. Screw in the new oil filter by hand until it's snug, then tighten it about three-quarters of a turn. Avoid over-tightening.
  6. Lower the vehicle carefully from the jack stands.
  7. Using the appropriate type and amount of oil as specified in your owner's manual, refill the engine oil through the oil filler cap.

If you're ready to change the oil filter, don't forget about the synthetic motor oil. A top synthetic oil, like AMSOIL Signature Series 5W-30 Synthetic Motor Oil, will provide the protection and lubrication your engine needs.

Fuel Filter

  1. Find the fuel filter, often along the fuel line or near the fuel tank.
  2. Before starting, relieve pressure from the fuel system. Disconnect the fuel pump fuse and start the engine until it stalls.
  3. Using wrenches, disconnect the fuel lines from the old filter.
  4. Remove the old fuel filter and replace it with the new one.
  5. Reconnect the fuel lines and secure them with new clamps if needed.
  6. Reinstall the fuel pump fuse.

Transmission Filter (Automatic Transmission)

  1. Lift the vehicle using a jack and secure it with jack stands.
  2. Find the transmission pan, usually located beneath the transmission.
  3. Remove the bolts securing the transmission pan. Begin at the corners and work toward the center. Carefully lower the pan.
  4. Remove the old transmission filter and replace it with the new one.
  5. Clean the pan thoroughly, removing any debris, sludge, or old gasket material.
  6. Position the transmission pan back in place and secure it by tightening the bolts to the manufacturer's specifications.

Remember

  • Always consult your vehicle's manual for specific instructions and recommendations.
  • Wear appropriate safety gear, including gloves and eye protection.
